Mid-Winter's bike ride

It was truly a gift!  The temp was in the mid-60's today, so the boys and I strapped on our backpacks and hit the streets for an afternoon bike ride!  We get a lot of smiles from pedestrians and drivers.  After about an hour on the pavement, we stopped in to Aunt Jessie's subway for a gourmet sandwich.  She's a sub ninja.

Caught our second wind and headed back to the house for a late nap.  Tonight, AJ and Alarris are comin over for dinner and a gift exchange.

My next post will be from our New Year's Kid Rockin' Eve party.  This time, I'm not gonna tell Eli he can stay up as late as he wants!

FIRST SNOW!

It's freezing cold outside, but the boys were exhilarated by this winter's first snow.  They really wanted to frolic in the flakes, so they got bundled up and started zinging snowballs at each other.

At one point, they were throwing snow at each other and JJ's glove came off.  So he picked it up and began the arduous process of putting the glove back on.  Meanwhile, Eli found another snowball and was fast approaching.  JJ gave him a stern look out the side of his eyes and said, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa....don't throw any snow at me right now, I'm focused on my glove".

workin together

I set up a computer on the kids' art desk and here they are working together on a game we rented at the library.  So cool when they actually cooperate!

Valerie update: Thursday HOME SWEET HOME

Last night, for the first time in almost two weeks, Bob and Val ate at their own table and slept in their own bed.  This will be my final update on Valerie as she is now home and can be reached by phone and email.

So many of you have left comments, emailed and called to let me know how important this blog has been for you in staying informed about our dear Valerie.  Thank you for the encouragement, I was more than happy to do it.

I was over this morning and she was resting peacefully, looking forward to lunch with Will and Jess.  She looks great and says she is feeling good.  God has truly seen her through this.

Valerie update: Wednesday...HOMECOMING POSTPONED

Bob and Valerie went back into the hospital today for a final visit with the doc.  He asked her to stay in Omaha one more night as a precautionary measure to ensure she was well-rested for the journey home.  They are both SO ready to be home with family, but respected the doctor's wish and should be home tomorrow sometime around midday.

Of course, we were very excited to see them tonight.  However, we are just so thankful for the success of the operation and her quick recovery that we can hold out one more night.  PRAISE GOD for helping her to prepare for this operation and the promise of having her home soon.

Valerie update: Monday the 13th

RELEASED!!!  The docs came in to talk with Valerie this morning and were very pleased with her recovery....so much so that they are going to release her from the hospital today!  She will spend the next two evenings with Bob at the hotel.  After one more visit with the doc on Wednesday morning, she will be Southbound!!!  We expect them home late Wednesday afternoon.

Val has improved from walking on flat floor to going up and down stairs, is eating solid food at every meal and is healing quickly.  Praise God for such a successful surgery and speedy recovery!

Valerie update: Sunday the 12th

Today has been a great day.  Val is feeling better than she had any day last week.  She also got to eat solid food for lunch!  She has fewer IV's and is able to get in and out of bed by herself.  She's been on a couple good walks today, regaining her strength all the time.  The doctors will meet with her tomorrow morning to discuss a release day, aftercare, and follow-up appointments.

To see Val today, she just looks vibrant and upbeat, especially in comparison to the first few days after surgery.  Brooke and I left this afternoon and I'm typing from my desk at home again.  In many ways, I wish we were still there to hang out with Val in the room and be with Bob.  But it looks as though we will get to have her back home very soon.

From the very beginning, Valerie has refused to let this cancer take down her spirit or her "fight".  She worked out at the gym diligently up to the very day of her departure for Omaha, watched her diet closely to ensure she was in peak condition for the procedure, and got all the information she needed to fight to the finish.  She just won't give up an inch to the disease.

To those of you who have been following this but have not been able to talk with her or see her yet, just believe me when I say...she is a beautiful and powerful inspiration.

Valerie update: Saturday #1

It's been a GREAT day for Valerie. When we went in to see her this morning, she looked much perkier and alert than yesterday. Arm swelling almost completely gone, her pain meds are still needed but not quite as often, and she was up and walking down the halls with the help of a therapist.

The doc says she is now ahead of schedule on her recovery! As I type this, they are moving her out of the ICU and into a regular hospital room for the remainder of her stay. They expect to release her from the hospital as early as Monday or Tuesday of next week! After that, she and Bob will stay at a hotel here in Omaha for a couple days, go back in for a final release check-up, and then head home!

Will, Jess, and Lauren are all departing today. Brooke and I will leave tomorrow afternoon sometime to rejoin our boys and head back to Emporia where we will anxiously await Valerie's triumphant return!

Valerie update: Friday #2

Valerie is still resting and sleeping a lot. She's not yet able to eat or drink, but has been getting up to walk once or twice per day. The swelling in her arm is all but gone and blood pressure getting lower (not yet to normal levels, though). No word on when she will be able to leave the ICU. They had thought maybe today, but obviously decided against that.

Valerie update: Friday #1

The scan results came back and there was NO CLOT found. Her fever is gone and blood pressure down to 157/77. PRAISE GOD for that good news. Arm is still swollen though, so more investigation to come.

Valerie update: Thursday #2 PRAYER REQUEST

Posting from Leavenworth (my folks house)...

Valerie is still in good spirits and has been able to get up and walk a little bit. She is still using pain medication as necessary and spends a lot of time sleeping and resting.

She has come down with a fever and is experiencing some swelling in her left arm and hand. They think it is resulting from a blood clot, which they will scan for tomorrow. Her blood pressure is also high. Brooke expressed that there was no need for alarm, but prayer is needed.

I will try to get in touch with Brooke and post again tomorrow before I leave Leavenworth for Omaha.

Valerie update: Thursday #1

Hello all,

From what Brooke tells me, Val is doing just great.  She is still in ICU as of late this morning, but they are hopeful of moving her to a regular hospital room later today.  I will most likely post again on Saturday, as I will be traveling today and tomorrow.  Much love!

Valerie update: Wednesday #1

Valerie is awake and doing well today.  She's very tired, but recovering nicely.  I will be taking the boys up to my folks' house on Thursday afternoon.  On Friday, I will head up to spend a couple days at the hospital before bringing Brooke back home.  I will continue to try posting at least once per day until Val is out of the ICU.

Valerie update: Tuesday #5

The incisions and removals are now complete.  Val is undergoing heated chemo which will end at 8 and she should be in ICU by 9.  She'll remain sedated through the night and they'll revive her in the morning.  That will be the first time she's been conscious since early this morning.  The goal is to have her out of bed and sitting in a chair sometime tomorrow.

The doc said he thinks she'll get a lot of "mileage" out of this procedure, but will still have to take follow-up chemo treatments in the near future.  More details on that later.

All in all....the 99% removal figure is gonna stick.  Now it's time to pray for a fast recovery.

PRAISE GOD

Valerie update: Tuesday #4 SUCCESS!!!!

Brooke texted at 4:15 and said the operation is still going strong.  They removed her spleen, gall bladder, appendix and a portion of her pancreas.  Also took a portion of her colon.  At 6:00 they went back in to continue the surgery.  Holly (nurse) says they achieved a 99% removal of all tumors and tumor mass.  They call that a slam dunk surgery!  Doc says he got it all!  Removed the entire primary tumor!  Woohoo!  Valerie is still doing great.

Valerie update: Tuesday #3

All vitals are still optimal!  They removed the omentum (lining of the stomach where tumors thrive).  Now working on removing tumors around the spleen and also removing the spleen.  Still looking at working into the evening, possibly as late as 9 PM.  Heated chemo has been ordered and is likely to be used.  Go Val!

Valerie update: Tuesday #2

Just got another text.....I'm just gonna retype it for you.  FYI:  Holly is the amazing nurse on whom Brooke relies for information.

"Holly came and we got a little different story.  So far he has been examining different organs and forming a game plan.  He will make a very specific plan and order of operation.  It will be a very long day.  Possibly into the evening.  Dr will not eat or take breaks.  Also said her vital signs were absolutely perfect and the bladder is clear of tumors which is a good sign.  Holly said she'll come back at one for the next update."

Valerie update: Tuesday #1

I've been anxiously awaiting my first update (of many today, I'm sure) from Brooke, and she just texted me about ten minutes ago.  Val went in for surgery at 7:30.  The O.R. nurse came out at about 10:50 to inform the family that the Operating Team is working on tumor removal!  Praise God!  She also reported that Valerie is doing well.

Monday update #2

Today has been full of scans, xrays, bloodwork, IV's and meetings.  Valerie is admitted to the hospital and will stay there tonight.  Basically, they will have her ready to go into surgery first thing in the morning...7:45.

Brooke said that the meeting with the doc went very well.  He is very positive and confident about the procedure.  He won't be able to make a final determination about the viability of the surgery until he has looked directly at the intestines.  One possibility is that he will get to that point and call off the whole thing.  However, he may feel that her condition is optimal for the task and begin removal of tumors and possibly apply some heated chemo treatments.

His nurse is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and helpful, and will join the family in the waiting room periodically to update them on the doctor's findings and progress.  Hopefully, we will all stay informed throughout the day!

My next post should be tomorrow morning sometime.  Thanks for reading.

Valerie update: Monday 10/6/08 Noon

I am going to post Valerie updates as I hear from Brooke throughout this week so that those of you concerned family and friends can stay informed.  I got a text from Brooke this morning that they were all settled into the hotel and were heading to the hospital to begin the preliminary phase of the procedure.
They don't get a viable signal inside the hospital, so I am waiting for the next news break whenever Brooke can steal away to send me a text.  Thank you so much for caring and praying.  Valerie seemed a little nervous yesterday when they came to pick Brooke up.  We all prayed together and sent them off.  I think she is pretty scared, but she is surrounded by her husband, pastor, and all three kids, so she will do very well.  She's so strong and positive.  I expect good news very soon.

Good morning, Momma

Splash party!

It's raining non-stop today...has been since late last night and more in the weekend forecast!  So Emporia should be in flood conditions at some point today.  The boys and I took the opportunity to explore some puddles......

Eli completes 4th year of existence

Tomorrow is Eli's birthday (August 4th), but we've been celebrating already.  The pic above shows Eli sporting his meanest kung fu face behind this year's birthday cake.  Brooke rented a cake pan for a cute little panda.  But with a few swipes of the butter knife, we transformed this cuddly wuddly bear into Kung Fu Panda!
We went to the fair last night and the kids went on a few rides after dark.  Today, the Symmonds family will be over to our house to celebrate Bob's birthday (which was on the first) and Eli's birthday.  Tomorrow evening, we'll have a house full of kids for a little cake and presents party.

Our baby boy is 5!

CANADA!

What can I say?  It was absolutely life-changing.  Uplifting, challenging, enlightening, relaxing, thought-provoking.  We were in the middle of nowhere.  No signs of civilization other than five primitive cabins along a 12-mile lake.  Caught and ate LOTS of Walleye.  Caught several Northern Pike.  Spent almost the entire time on the water.  Portaged to another lake. Observed wildlife (moose, loon, bald eagle, black bear, timber wolf, otter, deer, duck, mosquito).  It was the trip of a lifetime!

Got the entire crew up, showered, fed and to church only 5 minutes late.  That's nothing short of superhero status.  Just call us the Spectacular Seven.

marshmallow-candy cookies

I am back into the swing after a long process of re-entry into civilization.  Canada, in many ways, was the best vacation I've ever taken.  I am going to try to put a post together sometime this weekend.

Right now, however, Brooke and I have our hands full with 5 boys in the house all weekend.  AJ, his friend Terrell, Alarris, and of course, our two boys.  We went to the pool last night and then had a movie night.  This morning, Brooke prepared a wonderful pancake breakfast, then we split into teams and did a scavenger hunt around town (which secretly helped us accomplish our errands for the day).  Currently, all the boys are feasting on PB sandwiches and watching cartoons while their cookies are baking.

We allowed each boy to pick out an ingredient to go into the cookies, and let them each mix their own combinations into the dough.  The marshmallows (AJ's idea) ended up doing some interesting things in the oven.

After this, well enter "quiet time" for about an hour or so.

Tonight, we are having a friend and his 4 kids over for a big BBQ.  After they leave, we are going to play twister with the boys and try to spend all their energy before bedtime.

Tomorrow, it's church and more swimming!  It's a long, exhausting way to spend a weekend, but the boys love it.

Canada stories to come!

how do you do it!?!?!?!?!?

and by "it", I mean get online all the time and upload photos and videos and stay in touch and all that?  Just venting a little.  I look at some of your blogs and it seems like you all exist in some realm of timepods where you can just float in a moment for hours.

Sorry I haven't posted in so long.  I'm in the middle of a weekend of kid activity with my sons plus AJ and Alarris.  I'm gonna try to bring you some photos and a story in a day or so.

FINALLY!

Summertime, boys out of toddlerhood, two great jobs.....sweet relief. I was sitting in my backyard with a buddy yesterday. We each have two boys about the same ages. Yesterday afternoon we grilled hotdogs while they played together and climb the new rock wall. It was really nice to be able to chill out while the kids played, requiring very little intervention from the dads. Nobody in diapers, everyone feeding themselves. Life is good.

Peter Pan Playground

I admit to my negligence over the past month. You few frequenters of my blog may not even be checking in much anymore. Yet, I hope to make up for it with a post about how our local community overcame its long-standing, culturally segregated paradigms and focused its efforts and resources to reach an unprecedented achievement.

Four years ago, an organization by the name of "Future Leaders of Emporia" started a class of community-minded individuals. The organization starts a class once per year. Each group organizes some communally beneficial project and takes responsibility for seeing it to completion. A class numbering in the double digits is now down to four, but has accomplished possibly the most lofty goal of any class to date.

Their plan was to construct a playground in the middle of our city's largest park, Peter Pan Park. It is located on the South side of town (an area populated by mostly middle to lower class citizens, Hispanic in majority). The vessel for accomplishing this goal was a company by the name of "Leathers and Associates" out of New York. This company provides two foremen and a design. The rest was up to Emporia, which gathered tools, equipment, materials, permits, funds, and most importantly, volunteers.

The construction phase finally took flight last Tuesday, when ground was broken and the first saw blade spun. Volunteers numbered in the hundreds, working from 6:30 am til beyond sundown. By Thursday night, all the concrete was set and framework in place. Saturday afternoon found all decking screwed in and sanded. On Sunday, the last brush strokes of paint dried as the giant scissors opened to cut the ribbon.

I was completely unaware of the project until just
about a month ago. I signed up to work and put
my hands to the task for the first time on Wednesday evening. I worked a total of about 9 or 10 hours over the course of the construction. From the first day, the main foreman assigned me to a mock treehouse at the entrance to the enclosed play area (the entire playground is fenced in, with only one entry/exit point). With the aide of some helpers, I cut and installed the face of the tree house and used various saws and tools to cut out an organic shape to the tree trunks, tree tops and branches.

The playground is now the largest in town by far. It is colorful, safe, constructed of materials designed to last decades, and most importantly, it is our own. We built it. I was brought to tears when I stood watching dozens of children eagerly wait for the opening speech by our city manager to end as the moment of ribbon-cutting came closer. Most were just staring into the playground and bouncing in place with excitement. The ribbon was cut, the DJ cued up the song, "Celebration" and all those kids (my own two rascals right in the middle of the crowd) burst in and drank up every new wonder we'd built for them. It moved my father's heart like wind on a sail. I fought tears for a solid thirty minutes as I watch my boys play.

I know I'm gushing, but I don't care. I am often pessimistic about Emporia and its citizens' attitudes towards the city and it's own people. Yet, this past week, I was deeply moved to see people of every age, sex, race, and class come together in good spirits to accomplish something for it's children and it's future. That's something to be proud of.

First Spring-like weekend!!!

It was absolutely gorgeous outside all weekend long!  I've waited and waited, and it's finally here!

We spent all day Saturday at the Symmonds' house helping Val get a start on Spring-time yardwork (mowing, gardening, etc.)  Brooke looked so cute working in the garden :)  Then we spent the evening rooting for the Jayhawks.  Go Hawks!
On Sunday, Bob (Grandpa) and I took the boys to a local park for some kite flying.  They did surprisingly well!  We got both kites all the way out and ran around for about an hour.  Here are some pics of the boys...

JJ B-day

Here is JJ with his 3rd birthday cake.  Leonardo the Ninja Turtle, courtesy of Chef Momma.  We had 8 kids (7 of them boys) in the house along with a few family and friends for a great couple of hours with snacks, high-strung high-speed playtime, cake and presents.

We are thinking that future birthday parties may need to take place at a public venue...they are so much WORK!  It was truly a fun day, just exhausting.  We are going to have another little party for him on Wednesday, just the four of us.

I put together a little slideshow of Jaylon's first three years.  It is so cool to see the little baby turn into a big boy!  He is working through some strong urges of rebellion at this point in his life.  Nothing that worked with Eli seems to have much impact on him.  We're figuring him out, though.

Eli did pretty well taking a back seat for his little brother's big day.  Toward the end of the afternoon, he starting entering the meltdown stage, so I had to exile him to napland about thirty minutes before every left.

AJ and Alarris are headed home tonight, so it's back to the normal routine.  Hope all is well with everyone...and that you have a great week!

much love

Batmen

Here are the boys in their new Batman underwear.  We had lots of wrestling and even made a rock video while suited up.  Lots of fun.  Tonight, I stacked the couches like stadium seating for movie time.  Add some hot chocolate and popcorn, we've got four very content little boys.  Good times.

new doggies

Here are the pups we adopted from the local shelter, Lucy and Benny.  They are perfect little lap dogs who like to wrestle each other and LOVE to lounge on the couch.  They are so great with the boys, and the boys are great with them.  We are very glad to have them!

Expanded family

These are our little buddies, AJ and Alarris, whom we try to hang with as much as possible.  This pic was taken when they stayed with us for a couple weeks last January.  This weekend, they are here Friday through Sunday, when we'll have JJ's birthday party!  They are kinda like our second set of kids.  Scary!

Facebook no more

It's not that I haven't enjoyed Facebook.  I just don't make time to play with all the little applications and respond to all the invites, games, messages, pokes, notifications, etc.  I feel bad for my intermittent activity and don't want people to feel like I'm leaving them hanging.

My sister has a blog, and it seems like such a simple and clean way to put information about one's life out there for those interested to see.  I'm gonna give it a try.  I think there are probably only about 4 or 5 of you out there who might check in on it anyway, so it could be good.  much love
